FAQ

Q: Why do you call the product Mega Donkey?

A:"Mega" because it is based on the Atmel Mega128/Mega2561 processor and  "Donkey" because it carries an LCD panel along with many other heavy loads thanks to addition of two serial ports and a bunch of expansion I/O pins.

Q: Do I need a programmer to program my donkey?

A: No, an RS-232 serial connection is all you need. Because the Mega Donkey interface is the same as your PC, you will need to use a standard 9 pin serial cable and a null-modem adapter (adapter included) for the interface. You can connect the serial cable to either Donkey serial port and it will be recognized. Newer PCs may not have an RS-232  serial port, in which case you will need a USB to Serial Adapter. Most often these adapters require installing software to make them  function.

Q: I only have played with BASIC.  Is there a steep learning curve involved with learning C?

A: Conditionally NO. If you start simple you will learn to use and love many of the language features. Starting with a project composed of one file, as most of the demos are written, makes some of the complexity go away. Also, working with simple variables and arrays makes more of the complexity go away.  Keep example code handy and start with simple goals. Starting with a demo program, verifying its operation then making changes is a great place to start.
